Israel’s judiciary was described by Supreme Court Justice William O. Douglas as “an oasis in a world not yet committed to a rule of law,” at a dinner last night sponsored by the American Friends of the Hebrew University. Justice Douglas hailed the tradition of Israel’s independent judiciary which, he said, distinguished it from “most of the other courts in the dreary reaches of the Middle East and Asia where the tenure of judges rests largely on the whim or caprice of a dictator or military clique or a political party.”

Guest of honor at the dinner was Kings County Surrogate Court Judge Edward S. Silver who received the Hebrew University’s Solomon Bublick Award. Judge Silver was cited as the person who has made the most significant contribution to the progress and development of Israel. He is chairman of the Greater New York Committee for Israel Bonds and is a member of the board of directors of the United Jewish Appeal of Greater New York.
