Rightwing extremists were believed today to be responsible for a black paint smearing of a memorial stone here commemorating the Nazi massacre in August 1944 of 12 citizens, including seven Jews.
The slaughter took place just before the arrival of Allied troops. Only a few days previously, authorities had placed a wreath in memory of Pardo Roquez, leader of the slain group. The smearing, which occurred at night, aroused indignation. Police were hunting for the vandals.
