Premier Levi Eshkol and Chief of Staff Yitzhak Rabin briefed the Parliamentary Security and Foreign Affairs Committee today on the latest border incidents and Israel’s overall security situation.
It was reported that the Government took a grave view of the newest Syrian incursion and particularly the incident last night when marauders laid a mine on the main Tiberias-Rosh Pina road and detonated it electrically, blowing up an army truck. A battery on the detonating device carried a label that it was made “for the Syrian army. “The incident occurred about five miles from the Syrian border. No casualties were reported.
Premier Eshkol asserted today that Syria was the main base for the terrorist activities of the El Fatah commando group. He also said, in an interview with the army weekly, Bamachne, that no country could suffer silently and endlessly aggressive acts committed by its enemies. The Premier, however, denied any similarity between the Arab guerrilla attacks and the Vietnam situation, declaring “there is nothing in common between them.” He raised the possibility that El Fatah members were trained by the Chinese Communists.
