Five hundred Conservative rabbis from throughout America called today on their Congressmen to ask support of moves to implement United States commitments to Israel’s security. The rabbis, delegates to the Rabbinical Assembly’s 67th Annual Convention, also took steps to mobilize their congregations for mass demonstrations in support of Israel.
They requested other rabbinical groups to declare a day of fasting and prayer for Israel. A resolution called on the Government “to proclaim the fixed and unalterable policy, preferably in concert with other nations, but if need be by itself, to secure the territorial integrity of Israel.” The council also asked for “action now” to implement free access of shipping in the Gulf of Akaba.
The rabbis heard an appeal to avoid involvement with Christian clergymen in a campaign against secularism. Dr. Judd Teller, educator and historian, warned that the drive against secularism would cause “a serious schism within the Jewish community in which there exists no conflict today between religionists and secularists.” Dr. Teller said “the true test of interfaith cooperation will be the conduct of the Christian world in the present crisis facing Israel — the most critical since the Nazi death camps.”
