The belief that there were “positive developments” in the Middle East in the direction of an eventual Arab-Israeli peace settlement was expressed here last night by Arthur J. Goldberg, the United States representative to the United Nations.
Mr. Goldberg expressed that view to newsmen after a lengthy meeting with Secretary-General U Thant. The envoy cited as the basis for his belief the fact that there had been “a consolidation of the cease-fire under United Nations supervision” and that he looked to additional U.N. action on outstanding issues, including the status of Jerusalem.
The envoy said that “movement toward a settlement is going to be slow, but there has been some progress in the cease-fire arrangements and there has been no retrogression in other areas.”
