President Nasser told journalists in Cairo over the weekend that Egypt wanted a peaceful solution of the “Palestine problem” and that Egypt was acting at the United Nations “so that the world will understand that we are a people who do not say no to everything.”
The Times Beirut correspondent reported meanwhile that Egyptian defense forces were placed on a state of alert Thursday because of alleged Israel troop movements on the Suez Canal east bank and purported warnings on the Jerusalem radio that reprisals were planned against Egypt for guerrilla activities in Israel. Egyptian authorities tried to keep the alert secret, the correspondent reported but roads leading from Cairo to the canal zone, normally open for essential civilian traffic, were closed.
