Three Soviet Jewish mathematicians are among the seven holders of the Lenin Prize who joined 92 of their colleagues in signing a protest to the Government against the confinement of a fellow mathematician of Jewish descent to a mental institution, it was learned here today. The man committed by Soviet authorities is Aleksandr Yesenin-Volpin who was active in the protest movement of Soviet intellectuals. Although of a Jewish family, he is not generally known as a Jew.
The Jews who joined in denouncing Yesenin-Volpin’s confinement “without preliminary examination and without the consent of his relatives” are Israel M, Gelfrand, Vardim Arnold and Yuli Manin.
