Jordan followed Egypt’s lead in rejecting Ambassador Jarring’s proposal for a meeting with Israel on Cyprus but Amman’s reply to the U.N. envoy was less strongly worded than was Cairo’s, it was learned here today. Dr. Jarring, nevertheless, is continuing his mission and will make further visits to the various Middle Eastern capitals, informed sources said.
He met with Foreign Minister Abba Eban for ninety minutes, beginning at noon today. It is believed that he will soon draft a report to Secretary General U Thant on the progress of his peace-seeking mission so far. Diplomatic observers said that Ambassador Jarring still hopes that Egypt will modify its intransigent stand on peace talks with Israel. Some circles believe that Nasser is awaiting the consensus of world opinion which has been unfavorable to Egypt so far in neutral countries as well as in the West. They say that Nasser may be obliged to seek a new formula when it becomes clear that the status quo will last indefinitely.
