The Israel Cabinet will hold a special meeting this week for further discussion of Israel’s position toward Jordan in the light of the United States announcement that it considers the continuance of King Hussein’s regime as being in Israel’s interest, it was learned today. The date for the meeting was not disclosed. Cabinet deliberations have been focussed on the issue of whether Hussein still actually controls Jordan.
The Cabinet position that Israel will not indicate possible concessions to the Arabs in return for peace treaties also was understood to be under review. It was indicated that one possibility under consideration was that of giving Gunnar Jarring, the special United Nations peace-seeking emissary, a list of subjects on which Israel would be willing to talk but the Cabinet was reportedly split on this idea. It was understood additionally that even those Cabinet members favoring making substantive proposals to the Arab leaders through Dr. Jarring also insist that only signed peace treaties will bring evacuation of some of the occupied Arab territories.
