Anglo-Jewish leaders expressed displeasure today over the apparent intention of the Polish Ambassador here to ignore a letter protesting Poland’s current anti-Jewish campaign which they brought to the Embassy yesterday. Sir Barnett Janner, Labor MP, who was a member of the deputation that visited the Embassy, predicted that the letter would be returned. He said, “we did not see the Ambassador, although it may be that he was not available, but the position is very serious and we are very disappointed.” The letter, which urged the Warsaw regime to discontinue its discriminatory treatment of Jews and to end its incitement against them, was taken to the Embassy following a silent march from Hyde Park in which an estimated 4,000 representatives of British Jewry participated. The march was organized by the Board of Deputies of British Jews in conjunction with 20 other organizations representing the entire Anglo-Jewish community.
Sir Barnett said that the deputation was told by an Embassy official that the information they had about the situation in Poland was incorrect. Michael Fidler, Board of Deputies president, said that if the letter is returned, “I hope we will be told just in what respect our information is incorrect.”
