Jacques Torczyner, Zionist Organization of America president, called yesterday for the merger of the World Zionist Organization and World Jewish Congress. Addressing more than 100 ZOA leaders and officers from across the United States at a national executive meeting here, he said, “there is no reason whatsoever to keep two separate organizations and staffs when it is clear that the Zionist movement will have to go more in the direction of work In the Diaspora and also in public relations activities wherever possible.”
Mr. Torczyner said the ZOA has opposed the creation of a united American Zionist movement and this position was reaffirmed by the instructions given to the ZOA delegates to the recent World Zionist Congress. He noted that at the Congress the principle of a united Zionist movement was adopted. leaving its implementation to negotiations between the Zionist Executive and the various organizations and parties involved. “The ZOA would be willing to participate in these exploratory discussions, on condition that they do not in any way endanger Its integrity and fully recognize the unique position and role of the ZOA on the American scene,” he said.
