A communique on a meeting here between Israel’s Foreign Minister Abba Eban and Dr. Gunnar Jarring, the United Nations special Mideast peace envoy, was regarded by observers here today as indicating that the Swedish envoy had made little progress since the start of his mission late last year.
The communique on the talks yesterday, which were held at the home of Israeli Ambassador Aharon Remez, said only that Mr. Eban had reaffirmed his Government’s endorsement of UN Secretary-General U Thant’s recent report that it would be useful for Dr. Jarring to continue his mission. The two diplomats agreed to meet again in Jerusalem later this month after Dr. Jarring returns to his Nicosia headquarters and renews his contacts in the Arab capitals. Dr. Jarring was sent to the Middle East under terms of a Nov. 22, 1967 Security Council resolution. It was reported that Mr. Eban, in the talks yesterday, attributed the continuing impasse to Egyptian President Nasser’s intransigance. Mr. Eban reportedly cited recent Nasser speeches declaring that there could be “no negotiations, no recognition and no peace” with Israel even after settlement of the issues of the 1967 Six-Day war.
