UNITED NATIONS, N.Y. (Oct. 1)
United Nations Middle East peace envoy Dr. Gunnar V. Jarring is trying to arrange a meeting between Foreign Minister Abba Eban of Israel and Egypt’s Foreign Minister Mahmoud Riad, reliable sources here reported today. It was understood that Mr. Eban was ready to confer with Mr. Riad and that an answer to a Jarring invitation to such a meeting was awaited from Mr. Riad.
Following a conference with Secretary of State Dean Rusk at the United States UN mission yesterday, Mr. Eban told newsmen, “I am prepared to meet with any foreign minister in the world.” Asked about a Eban-Riad parley, an Israeli source said today that so far no such conference had been held but “we hope” it would be. Mr. Eban conferred with Lord Caradon, Britain’s UN envoy, today as well as the Rumanian and Mexican foreign ministers. Mr. Eban will interrupt his diplomatic rounds here for Yom Kippur and on Thursday will go to Lehigh University, Bethlehem, Pa., to deliver lectures on “Diplomacy in the Nuclear Age.” The lectures are underwritten by Jacob and Hilda Blaustein of Baltimore. Mr. Blaustein is a Lehigh alumnus.
Marvin L. Warner, president of the Cincinnati Jewish Federation, today was named to the U.S. delegation to the General Assembly. He is the second Jew on the delegation. Last week Louis Stulberg, president of the International Ladies Garment Workers Union, was appointed to the delegation.
