The Egyptian Government’s official spokesman charged at a press conference in Cairo yesterday that Republican Presidential candidate Richard M. Nixon unfairly favored Israel over the Arab countries. According to Dr. Mohammed H. el-Zayyat, who said his appraisal was based on incomplete news reports, Mr. Nixon felt “that Israel is an American protectorate.” He added that “If I were an American, I would say that Mr. Nixon has appointed Israel as sheriff in the Middle East.” The Egyptian expressed no opinion about Vice President Hubert H. Humphrey, the Democratic Presidential candidate. Both Mr. Nixon and Mr. Humphrey have advocated American military aid to Israel, including the sale of the supersonic F-4 Phantom jets. But while Mr. Humphrey spoke of maintaining a balance of strength between Israel and the Arabs. Mr. Nixon called for tipping the military balance in Israel’s favor.
