Ghanaian Government Will Seek Repayment from Israel for Plane Destroyed in Beirut

The Ghanaian Government will seek compensation from Israel for a $3.6 million Viscount-10 jet destroyed in Israel’s Dec. 28 commando raid on Beirut Airport. The Ghanaian-owned plane was on lease to the Middle East Airlines and bore that company’s markings. The plane was not covered by war risk insurance and Middle East Airlines has refused to compensate Ghana for the loss on the grounds that the plane’s owner is responsible for insurance under terms of the charter. Thirteen commercial airliners were destroyed, without loss of life, in the raid, a reprisal for an Arab terrorist attack on an El Al airliner in Athens that took one Israeli life.
