Twelve black Jewish students have been awarded scholarships for study in Israel this summer by Hatzaad Harishon, a multi-racial organization for aid to black Jews, the organization reported today. Three scholarships, each worth $900, remain to be awarded in the organization’s two-year-old summer pilgrimage program for black Jewish students, according to director Yaacov Gladstone.
The awardees are equally divided among boys and girls, he said. They include six college students and five high school students from the New York-New Jersey area. The awardees will spend eight weeks studying, traveling, working in kibbutzim and meeting other student groups in Israel. The 15 awardees are scheduled to leave the first week in July, Mr. Gladstone said. He added that the aim of the program “is to fortify the sense of Jewish identity among the youth, their identification with Israel and to bring back the message of Israel’s struggle for existence to the non-Jewish black community.” He said each student recipient must pledge to commit himself to be active on behalf of the Jewish community through the organization.
