Three Israeli soldiers were killed and two were slightly injured in a Gaza ambush today as violence flared sporadically on the second anniversary of the start of the 1967 Six-Day War. One soldier and four civilians were slightly injured when a grenade exploded outside Herod’s Gate leading into the Old City of Jerusalem. An Arab general strike shut down most businesses in East Jerusalem and Nablus today but attempts to extend it to other towns on the West Bank and Gaza Strip failed. Shops in East Jerusalem and Nablus reopened in the afternoon.
Reports from Gaza, Qalqilya, Bethlehem and Jenin where strikes had been expected said that business and public transportation were functioning normally. A hand grenade was thrown into a local crowd in Rafah in the southern Gaza Strip but no one was injured. An Israeli patrol killed an Arab saboteur near Umm Sidra pass in the Jordan Valley last night. The rest of the gang retreated across the river. The Gaza fatalities occurred when an Israeli mobile patrol was attacked from ambush. Security forces are searching for the attackers.
Small crowds of Moslems assembled at East Jerusalem cemeteries during the day and placed wreaths on the tombs of unknown Arab soldiers to whom memorials were erected in recent months. Police did not interfere.
