An international conference on science and education in underdeveloped countries will open at the Hebrew University here Aug. 18 and will continue at the Weizmann Institute of Science in Rehovoth, it was announced today. The conference will draw 116 delegates from 59 countries, among them Dr. Emile Darlin Zinsou, President of the West African republic of Dahome and Dr. Rene Maheu, secretary general of UNESCO. In addition, 28 ministers of education and dozens of scientists from abroad will participate.
Premier Golda Meir and Foreign Minister Abba Eban will address the opening session. Dr. Maheu is scheduled to deliver the keynote address on “educational prerequisites of the implementation and promotion of science in developing countries.”
Fifteen students from underdeveloped countries who completed a special course in agricultural engineering have been awarded degrees by the Haifa Technion. They were the last of four classes to complete the special course, bringing the total number of graduates to 82. Among the graduates were three Biafran students who, with five others here, are unable to return home because of the war there, All have taken courses in Hebrew here and will seek to find jobs in Israel until they can go home.
