President Nasser’s official spokesman, Mohammed el-Zayyat, appealed to the American people today, over the head of the American Government, to press for termination of arms supplies to Israel. The appeal was keyed to the Senate action today on the Administration’s anti-ballistic missile (ABM) proposals.

In an appeal to anti-war and anti-military elements in the United States, the Egyptian official accused the Nixon Administration of supporting Israeli occupation and military policies through the supply of modem arms. He voiced the hope that “the American people will refuse to endorse this policy” which he described as unqualified support of Israeli militarism.

(Reports to London from Damascus quoted the Government organ, Al Baath, as predicting that Israel would launch a major surprise attack to give government leaders a popularity boost before the October elections. The paper asserted that Israeli leaders were outbidding each other with talk of annexation and war.

(The Christian Science Monitor reported from Beirut that Arab diplomats were considering the possibility of another session of the United Nations Security Council “to discuss Israel’s defiance of last month’s Security Council resolution calling for a halt to Israeli integration measures in East Jerusalem.”)
