The Brooklyn Jewish Community Council appealed to colleges and universities today not to schedule the registration of undergraduate students or the commencement of classes on the Jewish High Holy Days, Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur. Sol A. Liebman, president of the council, and Rabbi Benjamin Z. Kreitman, chairman of its religious affairs committee, reported that they had complaints from Jewish college students that their schools had scheduled such activities on the religious holidays.
They said one complaint came from a Jewish student at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute In Troy, N.Y. who said he would be required to attend classes on Sept. 22, Yom Kippur. Another was from a Harvard student who said that dormitories were to be assigned to undergraduates on Rosh Hashanah, Sept. 13-14.
“We feel that colleges that have a high percentage of Jewish students and faculty should suspend classes during these High Holy Days to allow for religious observances.” the community council statement said.
