Measures to treat aerial hijacking like piracy on the high seas were urged today by Knut Hammarskjold, director-general of the International Air Transport Association (IATA). Mr. Hammarskjold said that hijacking, such as last Friday’s diversion of a TWA airliner to Damascus by Arab commandos, resulted from a gap in the legal system. “If appropriate countermeasures are taken by governments and by their organizations, acts of unlawful intervention probably could be drastically reduced,” he said.
