Israeli postmen were not on the job today everywhere but in Tel Aviv and Haifa in a long smouldering dispute with the government. Strike leaders said the walkout would last indefinitely. They said a ten-point list of demands has not been met although the deadline for a settlement agreed to by Minister of Posts Israel Yeshayahu passed two weeks ago.
The Journalists Union suspended its strike temporarily to permit radio and television to broadcast last-minute campaign speeches for today’s Histadrut elections. The journalists, employed by the Government Broadcasting Authority, are striking for wages equal to those paid by printed media. Non-party affiliated newspapers criticized the strike suspension which they said served political parties but not the public.
