Israel lost nine soldiers in the past 24 hours in a bloody encounter with guerrillas in the Golan Heights and in mining incidents and a fire exchange with Egyptian forces in the Suez Canal zone, a military spokesman reported.
Three of the soldiers killed in a guerrilla ambush in the southern Golan Heights yesterday were identified as Lance Corporals Avi Markman and Aharon Ezra-Nabi and Private Shlomo Benita, all 19. A fourth fatally wounded in the same action was Private Moshe Sabin, 18, of Haifa. Three soldiers slain in a tank-gun duel across the Suez Canal were Lt. Gedalya Yaron, 21 and Lance Corporals Jacob Tuval and Jacob Kalomitti, both 19. Private Hanaya Rasinovitz, 19, was killed this morning when an Army vehicle struck a mine near Lake Timsah, in the canal zone. A Druze, Sgt. Hussein Suleiman, was fatally wounded when his vehicle hit a mine south of Port Tewfik.
Saboteurs damaged an electric pylon near Nir Ozz in the Gaza Strip last night and a water main near Nahal Aza. One saboteur was killed in an encounter with an Israeli patrol near Nir Irzhak in the same area There were no Israeli casualties. A water pumping station at Kfar Giladi was damaged early today by saboteurs who crossed the Lebanese border about two miles away. The settlement is using an emergency water supply until the damage is repaired.
Police rounded up 40 suspects in yesterday’s hand grenade explosion at the Bank Leumi office in Nablus which seriously injured the Israeli watchman and caused slight injuries to three local Arabs.
