A group of Russian Jewish emigres charged yesterday that Israel was not doing enough to alert world opinion to the condition of Jews in the Soviet Union. The complaint was made at a press conference called by “Maoz,” an organization of Jewish immigrants from Russia.
The group alleged that the Israeli Foreign Ministry had adopted an erroneous policy of “playing down” any campaign on behalf of Russian Jewry. They said such a policy was probably based on “wrong information.” According to the group, the Kremlin is susceptible to the pressure of world public opinion which could be brought to bear to permit the emigration of Jews from Russia. They urged the Israeli press to write more on the subject which, they said, would be picked up by foreign newspapers and thus alert world opinion.
