Ida Kaminska who founded and directed the Jewish State Theater in Warsaw will open the new Jewish repertory theater she is establishing in New York on Oct. 12 with a Yiddish adaptation of a Spanish drama.
Mme. Kaminska’s new repertory theater will be housed in the Roosevelt Theater on Union Square. The opening play will be “The Trees Die Standing” by Alexander Casona. Mr. Casona, who left Spain during the Spanish Civil War, is now a resident of Argentina. His play. “The Daughter of the Sea,” won the Lope de Vega Prize in 1934. Another of his plays, “The Legend of the River,” was performed by Habima in 1951. Mme. Kaminska, who adapted the play, will also direct the production and will appear in it.
