The American Jewish Committee today hailed the results of Sunday’s national elections in West Germany. The organization declared that “the election results indicate a fundamental rejection of radical politics and simplistic solutions, as expressed by left and right wing splinter parties, especially the ultra-nationalist, authoritarian National Democratic Party (NPD).
The NPD polled only 4.3 percent of the vote, insufficient to win seats in the Bundestag, West Germany’s lower house. The AJ Committee statement said its repudiation by the voters was “particularly significant in Germany where radical polities has often meant right-wing extremism. Since these anti-American and anti-Israel extremist elements are often anti-Semitic, their repudiation augurs well for the future of a democratic Federal Republic.”
