Two officials of the American Jewish Committee have testified before the House Ways and Means Committee on the need for revisions in the public welfare system. Hyman Bookbinder, the AJCommittee’s Washington representative, and Alex E. Holstein, Jr., chairman of its national social welfare committee, praised President Richard M. Nixon’s statement last August which led to the bill now under reconsideration to revamp the welfare system. But both indicated hopes for more comprehensive legislation.
Mr. Bookbinder, who was executive officer or President Lyndon B. Johnson’s Task Force on Poverty, described the Nixon proposal as “the most exciting and promising challenge of the last six years…to wipe out poverty.” But he added, “it would be a great tragedy if the combination of those who think the program goes too far and those who think it does not go far enough should succeed in keeping this program from being launched.
