Jordan appeared today on the verge of an internal war that would pit King Hussein’s loyal army against some 20,000 armed Palestinian guerrillas. Reports from Beirut today said that some clashes have already occurred but government officials in Amman denied this. According to El Fatah, the largest of the Palestinian commando groups, guerrillas exchanged fire with Jordanian soldiers on the outskirts of Amman yesterday. El Fatah radio, which broadcasts from Cairo, has been exhorting guerrilla forces to deploy for battle.
