Israel Air Force jets attacked Egyptian targets all along the Suez Canal for nearly three hours today and returned safely to their bases. A military spokesman said the raids began at 9:15 a.m. local time and continued until noon. The prolonged attack was considered to be in retaliation for Egyptian air raids Saturday which killed three Israeli soldiers and wounded eight to the canal zone. An Egyptian Sukhoi 7 bomber was downed by an Israeli Hawk missile and two other Egyptian planes were hit and may have crashed. Cairo radio claimed that Saturday’s air raid was the biggest undertaken by the Egyptian Air Force since the June, 1967 Six-Day war. President Gamal Abdel Nasser told a newspaper interviewer yesterday that with Soviet help Egypt has rebuilt its air defenses and “is now able to aim counter blows against Israel.”
