The greatest current threat to world peace is the war in the Middle East, Foreign Secretary Sir Alec Douglas-Home said today during a debate on foreign affairs in the House of Commons. He added, “If the balance of strength in the Mideast is seriously tipped towards one side or the other, that seems to be to me the surest recipe for war. The right answer is direct negotiations between Israel and the Arab countries, but for one reason or another that has been refused. I would submit that the most useful thing we could do at this moment would be that Doctor Gunnar V. Jarring should continue to implement his peace mission.”
