“Coming down from a bad trip” will be taken care of in the future by a group of Jewish businessmen here under the leadership of industrialist Mell Ross. Alarmed parents and educators have embarked upon a project which will detect, cure and warn would-be drug users. The Impact Associates – as the group is called – had set up a $50,000 youth clinic which, it is hoped, will serve as a pace-setter in its field both in Canada and the United States. The Clinic, staffed by a youthful director and served by three detached workers, will handle medical, psychological, legal and other youth problems. The non-sectarian project benefits from the experience and qualified help provided by the Jewish General Hospital workers. The Allied Jewish Community Services of Montreal, whose twenty agencies are under the leadership of executive director Manuel G. Batshaw, have agreed to provide “back-up” services ranging from medical and psychological help to career counselling. The Jewish General Hospital – a unit of the AJCS – had contributed to the Youth Clinic with a voluntary service estimated at $70,000 a year and an experimental seven-bed emergency unit. The unit, with around the clock staffing, will admit patients with a minimum of formalities. Executive Director of AJCS, Mr. Manuel G. Batshaw and Assistant Executive Director Emanuel Weiner serve as consultants to the Impact Associates, whose membership is drawn from among young businessmen and professionals, mostly parents with youth problems.
