Three leading members of the United Church of Canada left this week for the Middle East, sent by the Toronto Conference of the United Church, in an effort to encourage reconciliation between Arabs and Jews. They are Moderator Dr. R.B. McClure, Rev. Bruce N. McLeod and Rev. Donald Sterling, chairman of the United Church’s Toronto Conference on international affairs. They have been asked to consult with Arab and Israeli leaders and Middle East churchmen in an attempt to contribute to a peaceful solution of the Arab-Israeli problem, the United Church Observer reported. Dr. McClure worked in the Gaza Strip for almost five years after 1948 as a medical man. The United Church Observer which has in the past carried numerous editorials and articles by its editor Rev. Al Forrest, regarded as anti-Israel in nature, carries several articles of a pro-Israel nature in its current issue by Aba Gefen, Israeli consul general in Toronto; Alan Davies, professor at Victoria College (a United Church Institution); and Simcha Flapan, editor of “New Outlook” in Tel Aviv.
