More than 100 members of the Student Struggle for Soviet Jewry confronted officials of the Communist Party U.S.A. yesterday in what Glenn Richter, SSSJ national coordinator, called “an hour-long shouting match.” The students attempted to present the officials with petitions on behalf of Soviet Jewry signed by 40,000 Americans during the past three days. The petitions were refused by CP spokesman Clude Lightfoot, who a week ago today refused to discuss the issue with a delegation of Jewish leaders. Lightfoot again charged the demonstrators with being members of the Jewish Defense League and with ignoring the plight of Angela Davis, the incarcerated militant black American Marxist. “The issue.” Richter told the Jewish Telegraphic Agency, “is not the JDL. The issue is not Angela Davis. The issue is Soviet Jews.”
