At the urging of Dr. Seymour P. Lachman, a member of the Board of Education, the board has unanimously agreed to change the starting date of next year’s spring recess from March 31 to March 30 to avoid having classes on the latter date, which will be the first day of Passover and Holy Thursday. “It would, in my opinion, be a great mistake for the New York City school system to start our spring recess without any consideration to the first day of Passover when attendance in both Jewish and Catholic areas, because of Holy Thursday, will be quite low,” Dr. Lachman advised Deputy Chancellor Irving Anker. Readjusting the schedule, he said, “would be in keeping with the sensitivity and best possible human relations that is expected of the public school system or the City of New York.” Dr. Lachman made his recommendation after the calendar conflict was brought to his attention by Rabbi Menachem Shayovich, chairman of the Commission on Legislation and Civic Action of Agudath Israel of America.
