The Israeli Consul General in Istanbul, Ephraim El-Ron, was kidnapped today at his diplomatic residence by eight armed men, it was learned here from reports from the Turkish capital. A group identified variously as the Turkish Front of Popular Liberation and the Association for Revolutionary Youth admitted the deed. They bundled him in a blanket, threw him in a car and drove off. No other details were immediately available. It was also not immediately known if there is any connection between the abductors and the Palestinian guerrilla movement. (In New York, an Israeli official said Turkish-Israeli relations were “cordial” but were on the charge d’affaires level at Turkey’s request so that she could maintain relations with Israel and still not anger the Arabs.) El-Ron was said to have been one of the Israeli agents who kidnapped Adolf Eichmann in Argentina a decade ago. His only son, a civilian agricultural pilot, was killed in a plane crash in the fog near Tel Aviv two years ago.
