A Foreign Ministry spokesman confirmed tonight that Israel’s Ambassador to Washington, Yitshak Rabin, has been instructed to postpone his return to Jerusalem for consultations, originally scheduled for next week. The official reason for the delay was that the Government wants time to study the results of the latest American diplomatic mission to Cairo in the persons of Donald Borgus and Michael Sterner. Bergus is the ranking American diplomat in Cairo and Sterner heads the State Department’s Egyptian Desk. Earlier, sources here said that U.S. Assistant Secretary of State for Near Eastern Affairs, Joseph J, Sisco, was expected in Israel next week and Rabin’s return was believed scheduled to coincide with Sisco’s presence here. Sources here said Sisco regards Egypt’s current stand on an interim settlement to reopen the Suez Canal to be more moderate than in the past. The Israeli view is that any Egyptian show of moderation is only “play acting.”
