Rio Jewish Leader Urges Ban on Anti-semitic Tracts

Dr. Samuel Malamud, president of the Jewish Federation here, today praised Justice Minister Alfredo Buzaid’s recent ban on the publication and circulation of a Portuguese edition of Hitler’s “Mein Kampf” in Brazil and urged similar action against other anti-Semitic tracts. Dr. Malamud referred specifically to the “Protocols of the Elders of Zion,” a 19th century forgery which has re-appeared in this country. On the Minister’s orders, all copies of “Mein Kampf” were confiscated on grounds that the Hitler auto-biography provoked racial hatred which, in a past era, resulted in genocide. The ban was ordered under a section of Brazil’s Constitution that prohibits manifestations of prejudice against any race, religion or class. A ban on “Mein Kampf” was issued here ten days ago by former Justice Minister Alfredo Nasser. The publisher of the new edition of the book is unknown. Some circles believe it could be traced to the Arab League office here.
