The secretary general of Histadrut, Yitzhak Ben Aharon, said here yesterday that the military build-up in the Middle East was reminiscent of World War II. Addressing a meeting of American Professors for Peace in the Middle East, Ben Aharon observed that the Soviet Union has supplied Egypt with greater fire power than was available to Field Marshal Sir Bernard Montgomery at the battle of El Alamein.
The trade union leader made the comparison in reference to Egyptian President Anwar Sadat’s speech to his troops Saturday telling them that he has decided to go to war against Israel because there is no chance of a political settlement. Ben Aharon said Israel was still searching for peace despite the failure of United Nations efforts so far and has activated non-governmental channels in pursuit of that goal. He did not elaborate.
