Some members of the House of Lords believe President Anwar Sadat’s claim that all possibilities for a peaceful Middle East settlement have been exhausted is serious enough to bring before the United Nations Security Council. The matter was brought up by Lord Brockway (Labor) today. He was told by the Undersecretary of State for Foreign Affairs, Lord Lothian, that Sadat’s statement would have to be studied carefully before deciding whether to bring it before the Security Council and added that he was “seriously concerned” by Sadat’s remarks. Lord Brook-way suggested that postponement of urgent action “make more likely the inevitability of a terrible war.”
Joseph Godber, Minister of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs informed the House of Commons today that Foreign Secretary Sir Alec Douglas-Home will be discussing the Middle East problem with Israeli Foreign Minister Abba Eban who is visiting Britain next week. Godber added, “We are extremely concerned about the situation in the Middle East.” (Britain’s Ambassador to Israel, John Barnes, conferred today with Eban in Jerusalem. They reportedly discussed Sadat’s latest speeches and other subjects connected with Eban’s visit to Britain beginning Nov. 28.)
