An agreement to “cooperate fully and formally in the promotion, development and coordination of the educational programs of common concern affecting Israel in American Jewish education” has been made by the American Association for Jewish Education and the Department of Education and Culture of the World Zionist Organization–American section. The joint effort has been in practice informally for many years, but was formalized, according to a joint statement, because “It is necessary to teach about the Israel of today in all its manifestations….”
One of the first major projects of the formal AAJE-WZO effort will be a commission to plan educational programs and activities keyed to the 25th anniversary of Israel in 1973. The two organizations will also seek to send more Americans–youths, adults, teachers, educators–to Israel for living-and-study programs; bring more Israeli teachers to US and Canadian Jewish schools; expand the programs for Hebrew instruction; publish new educational materials, and raise more funds for American Jewish education. Other educational agencies will be invited to cooperate.
