The Dean of Students of Queens College, E. Richard Covert, is planning to meet this week with the editorial board of a campus student newspaper which, in an article published 10 days ago about the Forest Hills public housing controversy, stated that “Once again the white bigots are predominantly Jews” and that “Jews and other white imps from the Mayflower cannot decide where Black people are to live.”
The article, written by George Hopkinson, a student, appeared in Voice of SEEK, a newspaper issued on the campus for minority group students receiving special academic help. A complaint about the article was filed with Dean Covert by Michael Green, president of the school’s Interclub Council. Green charged that the article violated a Board of Higher Education by-law that “no group or organization with a program against the religion of a particular group or against a particular race shall be permitted to organize or to continue at any college or school” of the City University of New York.
A spokesman for the college said Green’s complaint had been withdrawn, apparently in light of the Dean’s promise to meet with the editors of Voice of SEEK and discuss with them the policies of the City’s Board of Higher Education regarding campus journalism. The spokesman, Tom Ford, indicated that Green too would probably attend the meeting, a definite date for which has not been set yet. SEEK is funded by the City and State, and the Voice of SEEK is supported by student fees.
