More than 100 Jewish communal and Zionist leaders gathered last night to pay tribute to a leader of the world Zionist movement, Dr. Emanuel Neumann. They came to express respect and recall the contributions he made during his 25 years of service as a member of the Executive of the World Zionist Organization and the Jewish Agency for Israel. It also marked his planned retirement from office.
It was a festive occasion, and the various Zionist leaders, who have been heatedly exchanging charges and counter-charges during the current election campaign for delegates to the forthcoming World Zionist Congress, put aside their differences to express admiration for the man all agreed is the personification of Zionist theory and practice.
Rabbi Israel Miller, president of the American Zionist Federation, said, “As we pay tribute to Dr. Neumann we pay tribute not only to the Zionist movement in America but to the man who expresses it par excellence. This elder statesman is the conscience of the Zionist world.” Melvin Dubinsky of St. Louis, prominent businessman and philanthropist who was named chairman of the United Israel Appeal at its annual meeting in New York earlier this month, said of Dr. Neumann that he is a “great intellectual and deep thinker,
