Meyer Pesin, national president of the Jewish National Fund, and Abram Salomon, JNF vice-president, called today upon American Jews to mark the Day of Remembrance (Yom Hashoa V’Hagvurah) for Jewish martyrdom and heroism on April 11, with appropriate observances and by planting trees in Israel in memory of the six million Jews killed by the Nazis. Israel’s Knesset, the two JNF leaders noted, has decreed that the 27th day of Nissan (April 11) be observed as the Day of Remembrance.
The JNF also urged rabbis in the US to dedicate their sermons on the Sabbath preceding April 11 to the Day of Remembrance and its significance in terms of the history of the Jewish people, and to urge their congregants to pay appropriate homage to those who gave their lives, by the planting of trees that will grow tall and strong in the land of Israel and forever be sacred to their memory.
