Jacob Stein, chairman of the Conference of Presidents of Major American Jewish Organizations, today welcomed the statement issued March 21 by the 13-member Congressional Black Caucus pledging continuing support to Israel’s right to exist and referring to the significant contributions by Israel to the developing Black nations of Africa and to “Third World” countries in Asia. “This statement.” Stein said, “stands in sharp contrast to the resolution passed at the National Black Political Convention on March 12, at Gary, Ind., which called for the dismemberment of the State of Israel and accused Israel’s leaders of ‘Fascist desires.'”
Stein expressed the hope that responsible leaders of the American Black community in all fields of endeavor would strongly and publicly reject and condemn “the malicious statement adopted at the Gary convention” and affirm the support of Black America for Israel. “The American Jewish community,” he said, “calls for the prompt and unequivocal repudiation of the National Black Political Convention Resolution.”
