The Council of Ministers of the European Economic Community has authorized its permanent commission to negotiate with Israel over this country’s preferential trade agreements with the Common Market, it was learned yesterday. Israel claims that its preferential trade agreements with the EEC countries amount to little as long as Israel is excluded from the privileges extended by the EEC to a group of 77 developing nations.
Israel is not regarded by the Common Market as a developing nation. The issue has become more pressing lately with the recent entry of Britain and three other European countries into the Common Market. Israel fears that its trade with those countries would be injured unless its trade relations with the Common Market are re-examined.
