Morton L. Mandel, Cleveland industrialist who was reelected yesterday president of the National Jewish Welfare Board, announced the donation of a $200,000 gift by the Mandel family of Cleveland for the establishment of a new community center in Israel. To be known as the Mandel Community Center, the new building will be located in Kiryat Yam, in the Haifa Bay area, the Center will have a theater-auditorium, youth club rooms, nurseries, hobby rooms, numerous multi-purpose rooms, offices, discotheque, lobby and exhibit site, and other facilities. The center will be part of a complex which includes a school, library and gymnasium.
The gift of the Mandel family will be made through the Israel Education Fund of the United Jewish Appeal.
A vice-president of the Cleveland Jewish Community Federation, Mandel is a national vice-president of the Council of Jewish Federations and Welfare Funds.
A letter with 72 signatures of Jews in Kovno and Wilna was received by President Zalman Shazar, one of numerous messages of greetings received by Israeli leaders this week from Jews in the Soviet Union on the eve of Israel’s Independence Day. The Jews who wrote to Shazar expressed the hope that they would be in Israel by this time next year.
