Twenty-six recent immigrants, most of them from the Soviet Union, went on strike against the Absorption Ministry today because Jobs they were training for may not materialize. All have been taking a special course at a hostel in Netanya to prepare them for positions as tax experts specializing in added value taxes.
The Finance Ministry was supposed to impose an added value tax but recently postponed the plan. The immigrant students say that as a result their future is obscure and have demanded that the Absorption Ministry take up the matter and assure them of Jobs when the course ends in June. The strikers were told today that if they failed to return to their classes, the course will be discontinued and they will be returned to their homes or to absorption centers. The training of immigrant academicians for suitable jobs is the responsibility of the Absorption Ministry.
