Prof. Daniel I. Hillel of the Hebrew University’s College of Agriculture has been invited by Tottori University here to conduct research in a new Irrigation system he developed in Israel. He will conduct a joint study this summer with Prof. Tomoo Cho of Tottori’s Agricultural Department.
Hillel’s “trickle irrigation system” uses polyethylene pipe laid between rows of plants instead of the traditional sprinkler system. The system is said to be more efficient than sprinklers and can also prevent salt pollution. It is also less costly to operate. Prof. Hillel and Prof. Cho plan to test the system in orange orchards in the Kunisaki Peninsula in Oita Prefecture and plastic greenhouses in Kochi Prefecture. The system is now being introduced in some Israeli kibbutzim.
