Jewish leaders were told here today that Israel will remain non-partisan in the US Presidential election in line with a long-standing practice not to intervene in internal domestic policies of other countries. Those assurances were given by Yitzhak Rabin, Israel’s ambassador to the United States, at a private meeting with members of the Conference of Presidents of Major American Jewish Organizations.
Responding to a question, Rabin said Israel had not changed that policy and reiterated earlier statements that alleged remarks about President Nixon attributed to him in an Israeli broadcast were “misquoted and incorrect.” Jacob Stein, New York City, chairman of the Presidents’ Conference, said the group planned meetings with both President Nixon and Sen. George McGovern to hear their views on issues of concern to American Jews, both international and domestic. He said the meetings with the Republican and Democratic candidates would take place immediately after the High Holy Days, sometime during the end of September and early October.
