Two leading Knesseters and Gahal opposition leader Menahem Beigin voiced the opinion today that the government should reconsider its position on the death penalty for Arab terrorists. Speaking during the debate in the Knesset on Premier Golda Meir’s report on the Munich tragedy. Yizhar Harari of the Alignment and Gideon Hausner of the Independent Liberals both made a strong plea for the death penalty after Beigin issued this plea earlier in the debate.
The Knesset adopted a resolution which placed the responsibility “for the crime in Munich, committed by the terrorist groups, with the Arab states which provide these groups with bases, political support and the weapons they need for their crimes.” It added that Israel will fulfill “its obligation and exercise its right to defend its representatives and citizens, and will act with perseverance against the terrorist organizations, and those who aid them, until an end is put to their criminal activities.”
Concluding, the resolution stated: “The Knesset demands that all states and governments act efficiently to put a stop to the terrorist activities and to liquidate their bases.” Only Rakah, the pro-Moscow Communist Party, voted against the resolution.
